(Monday, April 29, 1968, at 7:00 p.m. EDT) — Hair, the first “rock musical,” opened tonight on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre in New York City, and would run for 1,873 performances.
Featuring a “multiracial cast of hippies” and “full-frontal nudity of the cast” to close one scene, the show combined the music of Galt McDermot and the lyrics of James Rado and Gerome Ragni.
The show had opened off-Broadwayon Oct. 17, 1967, at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater and a subsequent run at the Cheetah nightclub from December 1967 through January 1968.
