(Thursday, May 2, 1968, 7:00 p.m. CDT; during the Civil rights movement) — The Poor People’s Campaign, postponed after the Apr. 4, 1968, assassination of Martin Luther King, began tonight as more than 1,000 demonstrators moved to the Quitman County Courthouse in Marks Mississippi.

The first demonstrators would arrive in Washington on May 12, 1968, on buses from Mississippi and would continue through June 24, 1968.
