(Tuesday, May 7, 1968, polls closed at 8:00 p.m. EDT; during the Democratic Party presidential primaries, 1968) — Senator Robert F. Kennedy won his first presidential test tonight in the Indiana primary, defeating Senator Eugene McCarthy by a margin of 42 to 27 percent.

It was Kennedy’s first opportunity to appear on a state primary ballot since entering the race relatively late on Mar. 16, 1968.

Governor Roger D. Branigin, the Hoosier favorite son, came in second with 31 percent.

Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s campaign concentrated on winning the delegates in non-primary states, where party leaders controlled the delegate votes.
