(Monday, May 10, 1948) — The National Alliance for the Rapid Realization of Korean Independence (NARRKI) led by Syngman Rhee won 55 of 200 seats today (the most of any party, although 85 were held by independents) as more than 95 per cent of South Korea’s 8 million eligible voters ignored Communist threats of violence and reprisal to vote in the country’s Constitutional Assembly elections.

The elections were marred by terrorism resulting in 600 deaths between March and May 1948.
