The Monkees perform for ‘Head’ film 50 years ago this hour #OnThisDay #OTD (May 17 1968)

(Friday, May 17, 1968; 1:00-7:00 p.m. MDT)The Monkees rehearsed and performed today at Valley Music Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah, wrapping up filming for Head, the made-for-TV band’s motion picture debut.

Michael Nesmith’s “Circle Sky” was the only performance that made the final cut of the film, and even then, a new lead vocal was added during a studio session four days later in Hollywood (no other doctoring or overdubbing took place).

The venue for today’s concert had been changed at the last minute from Patio Gardens, a venue housed inside the Farmington, Utah, amusement resort Lagoon, to the Valley Music Hall in Salt Lake City for logistical reasons, despite fans already waiting in line at Patio Gardens.

To make amends, The Monkees delivered a 30-minute set later that evening (8:00 p.m. MDT) in front of a crowd of five thousand at Patio Gardens.

This particular show was not filmed or recorded, but it would constitute the last live performances by the original quartet in the United States until 1986 (The Monkees did perform again in the U.S. in March 1969, but only as a trio as Peter Tork had left the group by then).
