(Thursday, May 23, 1968; during the Democratic Party presidential primaries, 1968) — Senator Robert F. Kennedy, campaigning for Oregon’s May 28, 1968, Democratic presidential primary, challenged Vice President Hubert Humphrey to join him on the campaign trail today during a stop in St. Helens, saying “I think if he wants your votes, that he should come here and ask for your votes.”

Humphrey had joined the race on Apr. 27, 1968, but did not compete in the primaries, leaving favorite sons to collect favorable surrogates.
