(Thursday, May 25, 1848) — The 1848 Democratic National Convention adjourned today at the Universalist Church in Baltimore, having nominated Senator Lewis Cass of Michigan for President over Supreme Court Associate Justice Levi Woodbury of New Hampshire 179-38 votes on the fourth ballot.
In the choice of a vice presidential running mate, the convention unanimously picked General William O. Butler of Kentucky on the second ballot (after shifts). General John A. Quitman of Mississippi had finished second on the first and second (before shifts) ballots.
Cass-Butler would oppose the Whig ticket of Zachary Taylor and Millard Fillmore (nominated in June 1848) in the general election.
