(Saturday, May 25, 1968) — The Gateway Arch, a soaring 630-foot-tall arch symbolizing St. Louis as the historic “Gateway to the West,” was dedicated this morning by Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who called it a “living memorial” bringing on a “new purpose” and a “new sense of urgency to wipe out every slum” in the country.
