(Saturday, June 1, 1968, 6:30-7:30 p.m. PDT; during the Democratic Party presidential primaries, 1968) — Senators Robert F. Kennedy and Eugene J. McCarthy met tonight in the first face-to-face confrontation of their campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, disputing one key point relating to the Vietnam negotiations.

During the nationally televised debate on ABC-TV, McCarthy urged the Johnson administration to state now that it would accept a coalition government in Saigon while Kennedy opposed such a declaration at this time.

Kennedy had declined to debate McCarthy during the campaign, but changed his find after being defeated in the Oregon primary on May 28, 1968.
