(Friday, October 27, 1978; during the Arab–Israeli conflict) — Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, who put aside 30 years of bitter enmity to sit down together at the negotiating table, were awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize today for their progress toward achieving a Middle East accord.
The award was hailed by U.S. President Jimmy Carter, whose nomination arrived past the deadline but was cited for his “great role” in promoting a Middle East peace.
