H.W. Bush sworn in as 41st POTUS, Quayle as 44th VP 30 years ago this hour (Jan 20 1989)

(Friday, January 20, 1989, 12:03 p.m. EST) — George H.W. Bush, 64, was inaugurated as the 41st President of the United States today on the West Portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice William Rehnquist administering the oath of office.

Bush succeeded President Ronald Reagan who was limited to two terms under the 22nd Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Moments before Bush was sworn in, Dan Quayle, 41, of Indiana was inaugurated as the 44th U.S. Vice President, succeeding Bush.

Bush and Quayle, Republicans, had defeated the Democratic ticket of Michael Dukakis-Lloyd Bentsen in the November 1988 general election.
