(Sunday, February 22, 2009, 5:00-8:30 p.m. PST) — Slumdog Millionaire, a 2008 British drama film about an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of mumbai who is about to experience the biggest day of his life, won Best Picture tonight at the 81st Academy Awards at Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Slumdog Millionaire also won the Oscar for Best Director (Danny Boyle) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy based on the novel Q & A by Vikas Swarup).

Sean Penn won Best Actor for Milk, Kate Winslet won Best Actress for The Reader, Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight and Penélope Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
