(Monday, March 4, 1889, 12:40 p.m. local time) — Benjamin Harrison, 55, was inaugurated as the 23rd President of the United States today at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice Melville W. Fuller administering the oath of office.

Harrison succeeded President Grover Cleveland, 51, whom Harrison had defeated in the 1888 general election.

Levi P. Morton, 64, was sworn-in as the 22nd Vice President of the United States. That position had been vacant since Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks died Nov. 25, 1885, after suffering an apparent fatal heart attack.

Harrison and Morton, Republicans, had defeated the Democratic ticket of Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman in the Nov. 6, 1888, general election (while Cleveland-Thurman won the popular vote, they lost to Harrison-Morton in the Electoral College).
