(Monday, May 4, 1959, evening PDT) — The 1st Annual Grammy Awards, presented by The Recording Academy to recognize achievements in the music industry, was held tonight at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Domenico Modugno won Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)” and Henry Mancini won Album of the Year for The Music from Peter Gunn.

Mort Sahl was the host.
