(Friday, August 21, 1959, 4:00-4:10 p.m. EDT) — Hawaii, a group of islands located in the central Pacific Ocean, was admitted as the 50th state of the United States today As President Dwight Eisenhower signed the document of proclamation at the long table at which he meets his Cabinet.
The President acted after some 93 percent of Hawaiians in a plebiscite had endorsed the Hawaiian Admissions Act, which Congress had approved in mid-March 1959.
