(Tuesday, November 21, 1899, 8:30 a.m. local time) — Garret Hobart, the 24th Vice President of the United States since March 4, 1897, during the administration of President William McKinley, died this morning of heart disease at his home in Paterson, New Jersey.
Hobart was the sixth of seven U.S. vice presidents who died in office between 1812 and 1912.

Prior to adoption of the Twenty-fifth Amendment in 1967, the office of the vice president could not be filled until the next post-election inauguration. Therefore, the office remained vacant until March 4, 1901.
