(Friday, December 7, 1979; during the Wings UK Tour 1979) — Former Beatle Paul McCartney said tonight he is “talking about” a Christmas week concert with other rock superstars to benefit starving people in Cambodia (click here to watch video of tonight’s announcement).
Following a sell-out, wildly received concert tonight, the first of four shows at Wembley Arena in London and the 11th of 19 dates of the group’s tour of the United Kingdom to promote their recent album, Back to the Egg, McCartney said the United Nations may be making an announcement about the concert next week.
“We don’t want to pre-empt that,” McCartney said.
Sources close to McCartney said he had asked Elton John, Queen and The Who to join him in the benefit concert, which likely would take place in London.
Originally, McCartney had been approached about a possible Beatles reunion concert to aid Vietnamese boat people, but the difficulties in getting the famous four back together proved too great.
