(Sunday, January 4, 1970, 2:30 p.m.-4:00 a.m. British Summer Time; during sessions for Let It Be) — The Beatles, minus John Lennon (who was on vacation in Denmark, but had privately announced his intention to leave the group), gathered today at EMI Studio 2 in London to finish Paul McCartney’s “Let It Be,” overdubbing a guitar solo, orchestration, McCartney’s descending piano motifs in between chorus and verses, maracas, extra drums and backing vocals.

Although there were two further recording sessions for the Let It Be album involving just one member of The Beatles, this was their last time recording as a group — albeit without John Lennon — until 1994.
