(Saturday, January 10, 1920, 4:11 p.m. Western European Time) — World War I formally ended and the League of Nations was established today in Paris when Allied and German representatives exchanged ratifications of the Treaty of Versailles.
The United States, which had rejected the treaty Nov. 19, 1919, by a vote of 55 in favor to 39 against, just short of the two-thirds majority needed for ratification, in the Senate, took no part in the proceedings.
The Senate would reconsider the treaty once more, with reservations, on Mar. 19, 1920, but that vote, 49-35, fell seven votes short of the required two-thirds majority.
