(Sunday, January 4, 1970, 2:30 p.m.-4:00 a.m. British Summer Time; during sessions for Let It Be) — The Beatles, minus John Lennon (who was on vacation in Denmark, but had privately announced his intention to leave the group), gathered today at EMI Studio 2 in London to finish Paul McCartney’s “Let It Be,” overdubbing a guitar solo, orchestration, McCartney’s descending piano motifs in between chorus and verses, maracas, extra drums and backing vocals. (Sunday, January 2, 2000) — Admiral Elmo R. “Bud” Zumwalt Jr., who as chief of naval operations in the early 1970’s ordered the Navy to end racial discrimination and demeaning restrictions on sailors, then faced a haunting personal anguish that he attributed to the defoliant Agent Orange, died today at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, from mesothelioma.
