The Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ documentary opens in select U.S. theaters 50 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (May 13 1970)

(Wednesday, May 13, 1970)Let It Be, a British documentary film starring The Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr), opened at select theaters today in San Francisco, Denver, Baltimore and in Philadelphia where it first shown at the Duke at 11:00 a.m EDT.

Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the film documents the group rehearsing and recording songs for their twelfth and final studio album Let It Be, in January 1969. It includes an unannounced rooftop concert by the group, their last public performance.

Although the film does not dwell on the dissension within the group at the time, it provides some glimpses into the dynamics that would lead to their break-up.

The film’s official world premieres were held May 20, 1970, at the Liverpool Gaumont Cinema and the London Pavilion. None of the Beatles attended any of the premieres.

It opened at theaters in the New York City area on May 28, 1970.
