(Sunday, May 22, 1960, 3:11:14 p.m. Chile Standard Time; during the 1960 Valdivia earthquake) — Nearly 5,000 people were killed by an earthquake of magnitude 9.5, the strongest ever measured, that struck today near Valdivia in southern Chile and lasted approximately 10 minutes.

The initial tremor killed 1,655 people, and the aftershocks killed another 4,000. Two million were left homeless.

The resulting tsunami affected southern Chile, Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, eastern New Zealand, southeast Australia, and the Aleutian Islands.
