(Friday, July 11, 1980; during sessions for Stop and Smell the Roses) — English rock musician and former Beatle Ringo Starr began recording Stop and Smell the Roses, his eighth studio album, reuniting today with fellow ex-Beatle Paul McCartney at the Super Bear Studios in in Berre-les-Alpes, a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France.

By July 21, 1980, McCartney had produced four songs: “Private Property” and “Attention” (both McCartney originals) plus a cover of “Sure to Fall” and Starr’s “You Can’t Fight Lightning.”

Sessions for Starr’s new album resumed Aug. 11, 1980, at Devonshire Sound Studio in North Hollywood, California, with Stephen Stills producing.
