Reagan of California accepted the Republican presidential nomination tonight at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with a call to Americans to “recapture our destiny” by replacing President Jimmy Carter’s “trust me” philosophy of government with a new American compact that puts trust in the people and returns many federal functions to the state and local level.
