(Sunday, July 27, 1980, 9:50 a.m. local time; day 267 of the Iranian hostage crisis) — The deposed Shah of Iran, Mohammed Riza Pahlevi, 60, died today in an Egyptian military hospital, an embittered international outcast 18 months after being driven from his throne.

The major condition for the release of 52 American hostages seized Nov. 4, 1979, when Iranian militants took over the United States embassy in Tehran always has been the return of the shah to Iran, presumably to stand trial for alleged “crimes” committed while he was on the ancient Iranian throne.

The U.S. government made it known it would not extradite the shah and a crisis developed that is yet unresolved.
