(Thursday, August 3, 2000, evening EDT; during the 2000 Republican National Convention) — Texas Governor George W. Bush accepted the Republican presidential nomination tonight at the First Union Center in Philadelphia, pledging to “confront the hard issues — threats to our national security, threats to our health and retirement security” that he said the Clinton administration had consistently ducked.

Bush was nominated Aug. 2, 2000, after defeating former Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs Alan Keyes of Maryland (who had withdrawn July 25, 2000) 2,058 votes to 6 on the first ballot.

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Richard B. “Dick” Cheney was nominated for vice president by acclamation on Aug. 2, 2000, and delivered his acceptance speech that evening.

The Bush-Cheney ticket would oppose the Democratic ticket of Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee for president and Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut for vice president (nominated two weeks later) the 2000 United States presidential election.
