(Wednesday, August 12, 1970, approximately 1:00 p.m.) — Jim Morrison, the lead singer of the Los Angeles-based rock group The Doors, went on trial today, charged with one felony count of lewd and lascivious behavior, along with three additional misdemeanor counts of indecent exposure, open profanity, and drunkenness.

During a concert on March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Morrison had attempted to spark a riot in the audience, in part by screaming “You wanna see my cock?” and other obscenities. He failed, but four warrants for his arrest were issued by the Dade County Police department four days later.

The trial before Criminal Court Judge Murray Goodman was expected to take at least six weeks. It was delayed four times since the 27-year-old son of a retired Navy admiral pleaded not guilty to the charges last Nov. 9 and was released on $5,000 bond.
