(Thursday, August 17, 1960, evening PDT; during the 2000 Democratic National Convention) — Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, vowing to work for all Americans, ”especially those who need a voice, those who need a champion, those who need to be lifted up so they are never left behind.”

Gore was nominated Aug. 16, 2000, after receiving all 4,328 cast (on the day before the convention started, former Gore challenger Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey released his delegates and directed them to vote for Gore).

Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut was nominated for Vice President by acclamation on Aug. 17, 2000, after he delivered his acceptance speech the previous evening.

The Gore-Lieberman ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of Texas Governor George W. Bush for president and former U.S. Secretary of Defense Richard B. “Dick” Cheney of Wyoming for vice president. (nominated two weeks earlier) the 2000 United States presidential election.
