(Saturday, December 1, 1990, 11:12 a.m. GMT) — British and French workers digging the Channel Tunnel between their countries finally met 40 metres beneath the English Channel seabed today after knocking out a passage in a service tunnel.

The Chunnel connecting Britain and France opened four years later, establishing the first land connection between Great Britain and the mainland of Europe for around 8,000 years.
