(Saturday, May 22, 1971, 11:30 a.m. CDT) — The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum, more commonly known as the “LBJ Presidential Library,” was dedicated today in Austin, Texas on the campus of the University of Texas, with U.S. President Richard Nixon and former U.S. President Johnson attending.

Today’s ceremony took place against a backdrop of anti-Vietnam War slogans, chanted from a distance. Some 1,200 Texas highway patrolmen and Texas Rangers kept about 2,000 demonstrators several blocks away from the library.

The LBJ Library houses 45 million pages of historical documents, including the papers of President Johnson and those of his close associates and others.
