(Independence Day, Saturday, July 4, 1981) — “All Those Years Ago,” by former Beatle George Harrison, a tribute to his late former bandmate, John Lennon, who murdered last year by a deranged fan, peaked at #2 on today’s Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the first of three consecutive weeks.

“All Those Years Ago” was the first recording on which Harrison, and fellow ex-Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr all appeared since The Beatles’ “I Me Mine” in 1970 (although in this case, Starr and McCartney recorded their parts separately).

It was Harrison’s fourth appearance in the chart’s top ten since The Beatles broke up in 1970.

The single was backed with “Writing’s on the Wall,” with both songs lifted from Harrison’s studio album Somewhere in England.
