(Saturday, November 19, 1831) — James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States (1881), was born James Abram Garfield today into poverty in a log cabin in Orange Township, now Moreland Hills, Ohio.
Garfield, the only sitting member of the United States House of Representatives to be elected to the presidency, was shot by an assassin four months into his presidency and died two months later on Sept. 19, 1881, at age 49.
