(Thursday, December 14, 1911, at around 3:00 p.m. local time; during Amundsen’s South Pole expedition) — Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first person to reach the South Pole today, beating out a British expedition led by Robert F. Scott.

Amundsen and his team planted the Norwegian flag and named the polar plateau “King Haakon VII’s Plateau.”

The world would have to wait until March 7, 1912, before learning of Amundsen’s triumphant feat.
