(Monday, January 15, 1962, President Kennedy recorded his appearance at 4:50 p.m. EST) — First Lady Jackie Kennedy hosted Charles Collingwood and a CBS News television crew at the White House today for an unprecedented look at the American presidential residence.

The tape of the visit was edited into the program A Tour of the White House with Mrs. John F. Kennedy, and shown on CBS and NBC on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 1962, at 10:00 p.m. EST.

Attracting 46,000,000 TV viewers, or three out of every four households in America, it was the highest rated television program up to that time.

ABC television, which did not wish to share the $100,000 production cost for the commercial-free special, showed Naked City instead, and ran the program the following Sunday.
