(Saturday, August 18, 1962, 10:00 p.m. British Summer Time)The Beatles, the English rock music band as the world would know them, were born tonight as Richard Starkey, better known by his stage name Ringo Starr, debuted tonight as a permanent member of the group, the closing attraction at the local Horticultural Society’s 17th annual dance at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight.

The capacity for Hulme Hall was 450, but, due to the popularity of The Beatles, it was unofficially enlarged to 500 when they performed, following a two-hour rehearsal.

Starr replaced Pete Best, who was sacked by the other members of the group (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison) two days earlier on Aug. 16, 1962.

Starr wasn’t a stranger to the band, having stood in for them on several occasions in Hamburg and Liverpool, where he primarily played for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes.

Starr first played on the same bill as The Beatles on Mar. 13, 1959, on the opening night of the Morgue Skiffle Cellar in Liverpool. He was playing with Al Caldwell’s Texans, and further down the bill were the Quarrymen. Caldwell later became Rory Storm; the Quarrymen, of course, were to become The Beatles.
