(Thursday, August 20, 1992 evening CDT; during the 1992 Republican National Convention) — President George H.W. Bush of Texas accepted the Republican party’s nomination for a second term tonight at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, promising new, across-the-board tax cuts next year and pledging to control government spending.

Bush also attacked his opponent, Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas, as a throwback to failed Democratic policies at home and abroad.

Bush was nominated shortly after midnight this morning on the first ballot, defeating former White House Communications Director Pat Buchanan of Virginia 2,166 to 18 votes.

Vice President Dan Quayle of Indiana was nominated for a second term by voice vote.

The Bush-Quayle ticket would oppose the Democratic ticket of Clinton and Senator Al Gore of Tennessee for vice president (nominated in July 1992) in the 1992 United States presidential election.
