(Wednesday, August 23, 1972, 10:27 p.m. EDT; during the 1972 Republican National Convention, the Watergate Scandal, and the Vietnam War) — President Richard Nixon of New York accepted the Republican party’s nomination for a second term tonight at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Florida, summoning the nation, and particularly the young, the old and disaffected Democrats, “to join our new majority.”

Nixon was nominated on the first ballot last night, defeating Representative Pete McCloskey of California 1,347 to 1 vote.

Vice President Spiro Agnew was nominated for a second term today with 1,345 votes against one vote for NBC television journalist David Brinkley and two abstentions.

The Nixon-Agnew ticket would oppose the Democratic ticket of Senator George McGovern of South Dakota for president and former Ambassador to France Sargent Shriver of Maryland for vice president (nominated in July/August 1972) in the 1972 United States presidential election.
