(Wednesday, August 30, 1972, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. EDT but the Lennons probably did not appear before 5:00 p.m. EDT, following a delayed start time and sets by Sha Na Na and Stevie Wonder) — Ex-Beatle John Lennon and wife, Yoko Ono, with The Plastic Ono Elephant’s Memory band performed this afternoon at Madison Square Garden in New York City in the first of two “One to One” concerts in aid of patients at Willowbrook State School for Retarded Children on Staten Island.

Entering the stage to the pre-recorded chant of “Power to the People” the band segued into a powerful performance of “New York City” followed by “It’s So Hard,” “Move On Fast,” “Woman is the Nigger of the World,” “Sisters, O Sisters,” “Well Well Well,” “Born in a Prison,” “Instant Karma!” “Mother,” “We’re All Water,” “Come Together,” “Imagine,” “Open Your Box,” “Cold Turkey,” “Don’t Worry Kyoko,” and “Hound Dog.”
