(Labor Day, Monday, September 4, 1972, approximately 5:10 p.m. EDT) — Former Beatle John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, and the Elephant’s Memory band made an unannounced appearance today towards the end of the all-day annual American TV special Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon, an event to raise money to combat muscular dystrophy.

From the Hotel Americana in New York City, John and the band performed “Imagine” then Yoko did her brand new song “Now or Never” and they finished with a reggae version of “Give Peace a Chance,” joined by host Jerry Lewis on trumpet.

It would be Lennon’s last public performance for more than two years.
