(Tuesday, November 6, 1962) — President John F. Kennedy’s youngest brother, Ted Kennedy, 30, scored a decisive victory today over Republican George C. Lodge, son of Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., who lost re-election to the Senate in 1952 to JFK, to win a special election in Massachusetts to fill the vacant seat previously held by his brother, John, who had taken office as the U.S. president.

Kennedy was 30 years old when he first entered the Senate, winning a November 1962 special election in Massachusetts to fill the vacant seat previously held by his brother John, who had taken office as the US president.

Kennedy took office the following day, on Nov. 7, 1962. He was elected to a full six-year term in 1964 and was later re-elected seven more times, serving until his death on Aug. 25, 2009.
