(Wednesday, December 5, 1792, during the 1792 United States presidential election) — George Washington of Virginia was unanimously re-elected today as the first president of the United States.

Washington, who ran essentially unopposed as an independent, received all 132 electoral votes.

Vice President John Adams, backed by the Federalist Party in his bid for another term, was also re-elected, defeating New York Governor George Clinton, backed by the Democratic-Republican Party, 77-50 electoral votes.

The electors’ votes were tabulated and certified on Feb. 17, 1793, during a joint session of Congress. Washington and Adams were sworn in for second terms on March 4, 1793.
