(Saturday, March 4, 1893, approximately 1:55 p.m. local time) — Grover Cleveland of New York, the 22nd President of the United States (1885-1889), took the oath of office today as the 24th President of the United States at the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
Cleveland, a Democrat, succeeded President Benjamin Harrison, a Republican who served one term in the White House.
Cleveland became the only U.S. president to serve two non-consecutive terms.

Approximately an hour earlier, former First Assistant United States Postmaster General Adlai Stevenson I of Illinois was sworn in as the 23rd vice president of the United States, succeeding Vice President Levi P. Morton.
The Democratic ticket of Cleveland-Stevenson had defeated the Republican ticket of Harrison, who was seeking a second term, and Whitelaw Reid in the 1892 election by 277-145 votes in the Electoral College.
