(Easter Sunday, April 1, 1923)Safety Last!, a romantic comedy silent film about a small-town boy out to impress his girlfriend scales a skyscraper in the big city, premiered today at the Strand Theater at 1579 Broadway, at the northwest corner of 47th Street and Broadway in Times Square, New York City.

Directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, the film stars Harold Lloyd, Mildred Davis, Bill Strother, Noah Young and Westcott Clarke.

It includes one of the most famous images from the silent-film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic.

A reviewer for The New York Times wrote, “Harold Lloyd’s latest effort is filled with laughs and gasps… Although laughter follows quickly on the heels of each thrill, the thrill lasts long enough for a man to feel that dizzy feeling when looking down from a height of twelve stories.”
