(Saturday, May 29, 1943) — “That Old Black Magic” by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra (with vocals by Skip Nelson and the Modernaires) peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard National Best Selling Retail Records chart for one week.

It was Miller’s 16th of sixteen number-one hits on the chart (1938-1943).

At the peak of his civilian career in 1942, Miller decided to join the armed forces at the height of World War II, reporting to the Seventh Service Command at Omaha as a captain in the Army Specialist Corps on Oct. 7.

Miller went missing in action (MIA) on December 15, 1944, on a flight over the English Channel.
