The basic tracks for the album were recorded Aug. 1-5, 1973, at the Record Plant. Most of the overdubs were recorded starting Aug. 10, 1973 (overdubs for “Mind Games” were specifically recorded on Aug. 20 and “Out The Blue” today), and mixing would begin on Aug. 21, 1973 (“Out The Blue” was mixed on Sept. 11, 1973).

The album (mixing, editing and mastering) would be completed on Sept. 20, 1973, and Lennon would leave for Los Angeles the following day with his new mistress, May Pang, and begin an 18-month separation from his wife of four years, Yoko Ono.

The album, which was released in the U.S. on Oct. 29, 1973, and in the UK on Nov. 16, 1973 was Lennon’s first self-produced recording without help from Phil Spector.
