(Monday, October 7, 1963) — The Rolling Stones recorded their second single today at Kingsway Sound studio in London, including “I Wanna Be Your Man,” composed and given to the group by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, members of another British rock band, The Beatles, and “Stoned,” an original group composition.

The song was primarily written by Paul McCartney, and finished by Lennon and McCartney in the corner of a Richmond, London club while Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were talking.

Released as their second single on Nov. 1, 1963, the Stones’s version was the group’s first UK top 20 hit, peaking at number 12 on the British chart.

The Beatles also recorded “I Wanna Be Your Man” with drummer Ringo Starr on lead vocals. That version was recorded over four sessions starting Sept. 12, 1963 (two days after the tune’s composition was completed), and ending Oct. 23, 1963.

The Beatles released their version on their second studio album With The Beatles, released Nov. 22, 1963.
