(Thursday, December 17, 1903, 10:35 a.m. EST) — Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright of Dayton, Ohio, conducted the first successful manned powered-airplane flights today four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, at what is now known as Kill Devil Hills, using their experimental craft, the Wright Flyer.

Orville flew the first flight, which lasted 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 feet.

The Wright brothers made three more flights, with Wilbur and Orville taking turns; the fourth flight, piloted by Wilbur, lasted 59 seconds and covered a distance of 852 feet.
Before they could make a fifth flight, the aircraft was overturned by a gust of wind, destroying it.
