(Monday, March 16, 1964) — Paul McCartney denied a report that he had married his girlfriend, actress Jane Asher, during an interview today in London via telephone with New York disc jockey Murray the K.

Gossip columnist Walter Winchell had reported that McCartney was indisputably secretly married to Asher.

While hosting a closed-circuit broadcast of the Beatles’ Washington, D.C., concert film over the weekend of March 14 and 15, Murray the K was beseeched by fans to find out the truth.

He did so via his “beeper phone,” most likely today, a day when only Ringo was needed on the set of their first film A Hard Day’s Night.

Paul admitted that Jane is his girlfriend but says the rumor of their wedding is “a lie.”
