(Monday, June 1, 1964, 2:30-7:15 p.m. BST) — The Beatles recorded “Matchbox” and “I’ll Cry Instead” for their next studio album A Hard Day’s Night, during the first of two recording sessions today at EMI Studio 2 in London.

Ringo Starr sang the lead vocals and drummed simultaneously on the first track, “Matchbox,” and the song’s composer Carl Perkins was present in the studio it was recorded.

At a party following their May 31 concerts, The Beatles had met Carl Perkins and invited him to drop by the studio the following day.

Carl watched Ringo sing “Matchbox,” a traditional blues number he had recorded for Sun Records in 1957.

The second song, John Lennon’s “I’ll Cry Instead,” was recorded in two separate sections, labelled A and B, which were later edited together (the U.S. mono mix contained a repeat of the first verse following the bridge, which was left out of EMI’s edit).

The song was completed with six takes of section A and two of section B.

The group also recorded the bulk of a cover version of Larry Williams’ “Slow Down,” but it would be not be completed until June 4 in the group’s absence.
