(Wednesday, June 3, 1964, 5:30-9:30 p.m. BST) — Following Jimmy Nicol’s hastily-arranged rehearsal ahead of The Beatles’ world tour (drummer Ringo Starr had fallen ill during a morning photo session and was temporarily replaced by Nicol), John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison recorded three demos and completed two tracks for their next album A Hard Day’s Night tonight at EMI Studio 2.

The demos included Harrison’s “You Know What to Do,” “It’s For You,” a McCartney composition written for Cilla Black, and “No Reply,” which would appear in it’s final form on the Beatles For Sale album later in the year.

Curiously, a drummer is on the “No Reply” performance, although Nicol had departed by this time. It is likely that McCartney filled the drum stool on this occasion, and that Harrison played bass guitar.

There has also been speculation that, had Starr not been taken ill, one of these songs would have been included on the band’s third studio album A Hard Day’s Night, which was, unusually, released with 13 tracks.

Towards the end of the session, the three Beatles taped a number of overdubs onto “Any Time At All” and “Things We Said Today,” which were the last recordings made for the album A Hard Day’s Night.
